Today, Dr. Redick brought up the concepts of communitas and community. Obviously, I had already known what community was, but I had never heard of communitas. The definition of communitas can be found in Turners book, “Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture.” Communitas is a social contract, “a relational quality of full unmediated communication and communion.” It is spontaneous bond formed between people in certain situations. At first, I didn’t think I had ever experience communitas before, but now I realize that I experience it on a smaller scale all the time. For example, today I took the elevator to the fourth floor of JR. In the elevator were 2 other people. One was also going to the fourth floor, and the other stopped the elevator to get off at the second floor. It was not a big deal, but when the person got off and the doors shut we both looked at each other and shook our heads with a grin. We both knew that we were thinking the same thing, and on a smaller scale we made that connection that communitas talks about.
