Trey Reed, Lane's First Axiom

Today, Dr. Redick talked about axioms for the study of sacred place. These axioms can be found in Lane’s book, “Landscape of the Sacred.” The first axiom is that sacred place is not chosen, it chooses. At first, I understood this axiom however; after reflecting on it I realized that I don’t understand how sacred place chooses. So I read the second axiom to see if it would answer my question. Lane’s second axiom states that sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary. This axiom confused me further, because if place is ritually made extraordinary, then it is the people choosing the place to perform the rituals, not the place itself. I find this to be contradictive of the first axiom because this means that the place is not doing the choosing.
