Eric Shulman on Turner's Pilgrims in Relation to Appalachian Trail
In “Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture”, Turner describes pilgrims as being in two different states. They are going from their liminal state into a state similar to what tourisms feel. It is weird to think, that in their home in the environment, that they switch from liminal state back to their normal state and vise versa. Hikers along the Appalachian Trail do not share this same feeling. Most (I would say 99%) hikers feel a sense of enjoyment in every aspect the trail has to offer. The difference between the two is that individuals who walk the trail start at a destination of their choosing, wherever it might be and then finish their adventure in another destination (instead of walking some sort of distance and then retreating back like Turner described).
