Lauren Achtemeier: Deep Ecology in World Religions
While looking for sources for my paper, I came across a very interesting book about the connection of world religions to ecology. It was interesting how the essays in the book drew themes across Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and others, introducing the underlying themes in each with their connection to nature. Some sections had excerpts, while other simply drew across an overall theme in the religion to make a point. I was able to learn that despite differences in these religions, they all draw upon themes about individual experiences in nature and the effect upon spirituality. Many preach respect for the animals and plants, or emphasis retaining that connection in everyday life. It is interesting to realize how environmentalism is not really a new idea; it is simply one that has resurfaced. One essay provided Biblical verses telling people to treat the land well and not overuse resources. It seems that this idea is not very new to the world, but has simply been overlooked by most of the human population in the light of progress. It is very engrained in our habits to try and reap the most we can out of resources, which is not a good plan for the future. To get back into touch with the nature necessary to support us, spirituality may allow people to understand that being in touch is not only for hippies and tree huggers.
