Otto - Idea of the HOLY
- mystery – wholly other
- tremendum- awe, terrible – sublime
- fascination- drawn to the holy
- (Pulls you in and is terrifyingly good)
This word, this whole discussion created such an awe in my mind and heart that it might have been completely worth taking this class just to be in class for that one day. This is one of the most profound concepts of Christianity. In C.S. Lewis’s book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, one of the main characters Lucy asks the beavers if the Lion (representative of God) is safe. Their response is “Safe? Who said anything about safe? But He’s good.” What a mind-blowing response. Most would simply associate as safe=good, dangerous = bad. But what if that is not how God thinks? What if to fight the bad the good must also be dangerous. In that case would you not want to be on the side of the dangerous individual who was good? Someone who stands fiercely in the name of what is righteous? I love the idea of something that is “terrifyingly good.” It gives me more comfort than something that is safe. It says to me triumph, it says unconquerable. And that is sacred.
