Emily Madeline. communitas

The idea of communitas was a significant theme this semester in class; it came up roughly once a week. It got me thinking about how important is in on the AT & other pilgrimages though. If there was some sort of hierarchy on these journeys, the people doing them wouldn't get nearly as much out of these trips. If that was the case, less people would go on these trips. However, to some extent there could be some sort of hierarchy shown. The difference between hikers, or pilgrims, would be the experience people have. People who have done these trips before have an insight to the trail and probably understand it better than those who haven't. But what makes communitas work is the fact that all the hikers still meet each other on common ground.
