Lane talks about place and how it can have different meanings in reference to it as "topos" and "chora." When thinking about these two concepts, I can relate easily to them and can think of numerous times when I experienced things like them myself. Topos is land as a mere location, and it's quantifiable and measurable. Chora is place as an energizing force and draws connections to our everyday lives. Chora is different in the fact that it's place with a much deeper meaning, rather than a specific place and nothing else.
Many times I have experienced place as chora. Places from my youth for example, like the fields I used to play sports on or the woods I played with in my backyard. To a lot of people, the soccer and baseball fields I played on as a kid are nothing more than regular playing fields. But to me, they mean a lot more. When I look at them or visit them, they remind me of my childhood and memories come rushing back. When I think about the woods in my backyard, they aren't just ordinary woods, it's a place where me and my sisters would play everyday. Because of these experiences and memories, these places have a force that is inside me at all times, making them place as "chora."
