Last week while I was in class, Dr. Redick started to talk about the power of nature and Mt. Rainier in specific. I thought it was amazing the force that nature could create on it's own, and looking at the slides it was incredible to see the damage and results of the mountain.
Dr. Redick showed a picture of him at the bottom of a mountain, and he started to describe the power of water running down the canyon, and the tsunamis and floods that occur seasonally. There were deposited logs everywhere and rocks that weighed thousands of pounds were thrown like they were nothing. This gave a sense of a higher power, something that was above humankind like a creator or god.
Next, the class saw pictures of a trail in a forest. The trail was completely destroyed by weather and enormous logs laying across the paths. They were old groves trees and were something like 500-700 years old. Seeing these massive trees rooted up and the rocks that were dug up made me think about the actual power that would be required to do that. The trees were 10 ft. in diameter and 400 ft. long. Just thinking about the size and age of the trees is incredible alone. After seeing these pictures it gave me a good sense of the power of nature and even its power to kill. Its power is so massive and to see the things it was destroying made people look like little ants. It was truly incredible.
