Travis Bruns Brewing Up A Business 4/22

I recently started reading Sam Calagione’s Brewing Up A Business. It is a fascinating book about how he how he became a beer brewer and his objectives for his company. His story really connects with me. However, I am unsure if I could ever do what he did to create Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.
The reason this book really connects with me because I’d like to consider myself one of the few beer connoisseurs of my age. I have not yet experienced the craft breweries, but I have done my fair share of drinking the major brands and a few of the Virginia brews that have found their way to the shelf in grocery stores. My friend and I made a beer pong table out of bottle caps we collected from dozens of varieties of beer. We had a vast collection of over two thousand caps before we began construction on the table. During the process I learned the subtle differences between beers. I learned about the scale of bitterness and the flavors that entailed with using hops, barley, or wheat. This prior learning has caused me to want to take on a new endeavor: I hope to learn how to brew beer this summer. I was toying with the idea, but by reading this book, I am certain that I am going to do it this summer.
What Sam Calagione did to begin his business is truly inspiring. He started with nothing and has since built a million dollar company. I’m afraid I will never be able to take this leap of faith. I feel I’d be too afraid of failing to fully concentrate on succeeding. But still I must wonder since my life is still early that maybe one day I will gain the gumption to do what Sam Calagione has gone through and accomplished. Maybe not in the same industry, but definitely something I love doing and worth the risk.
