Laura Hancock - Masks and their mystery
A mask conceals and reveals... Why do people purposefully 'wear' masks to try to conceal something about themselves? How do others perceive and react to this concealment? Is the revelation that can also come from 'wearing' masks, from both the 'wearer' of the mask and the person viewing the person 'wearing' the mask? People can 'wear' masks because they are trying to hide something about themselves, or because they are trying to hide something to THEN recreate something else in its place. Both reasons can create mystery, which can attract people. This could be because in the absence of something definite and clearly defined, people can create and project something else to the gap. This can create false hope because an 'I - it' relationship is happening; there are expectations and a purpose behind the the interactions. The reciprocity in the relationship is gone - one person is hiding, and the other is creating something to fill that gap.
