Kyle Tobin Lanes Three Approaches

Belden Lanes first describes the ontological approach as being a perspective in which a sacred place is radically set apart from everything profane; it is a site recognized as manifesting its own inherent, chtonic power and numinosity. This ontological approach is describing an ordinary place that has been invaded by supernatural forces. I feel as if this approach is a little eccentric because I don't really believe in supernatural forces acting in today's world. Lanes second approach is a cultural one in which a site is under disagreement by conflicting parties. This cultural approach is a lot more realistic compared to the first one because there are past and present examples of numerous places being fought over by two parties. The phenomenological approach is lanes last approach and believes that we should take into account the integrity of the place in interpreting the way in which any particular site is to be perceived as sacred. This approach is rather broad because it is given a none living object human characteristics to help further describe its purpose.
