Early in our class the students were asked what the difference between nature and wilderness was. A lot of us were rather dumbfounded by the question. I think it is safe to assume that many of us had really thought of the two of them were synonymous. we came up with 2 lists:
Wilderness: Nature:
Nature untouched by man Raw- (the true sense of something)
separated by society essence, inherent properties
boundaries Nat which is the root - native, natal
extremes art - artificial, "made", to "fashion"
remoteness Laws of nature - gravity, physics
nature untamed/runs course
unsafe
uninhabited
without intervention
no law
survival
It is clear to see that some of these overlap with one another. I found it interesting how related they were yet how different they were as well. Nature seems to be more basic and fundamental and wilderness is more of an example of a place where nature is most primitive. Interesting either way you look at it.
