Daniel Bogert "Rites of Passage (Turner)"

I really related to the class where Dr. Redick was talking about when a person becomes an "adult". Is it 18 because they can vote? 21 because they can drink? 35 because they can run for President? Most likely it is not one of these arbitrary numbers but instead reflects an internal change and maturity. But how does one achieve this rite of passage? Dr. Redick went through the liminal stage of joining the Marines. The breaking down of previous social norms and constraints allows for individual growth and transformation. But I'm 22 years old and I still don't feel like an adult. I think the reason for this may be because I've never entered a liminal stage. To me CNU is more of a school than it is a college, and I live only about 15 minutes away. Therefore college really hasn't been drastically different for me. For this reason i'm thinking about transferring to a college farther away or maybe even spending some time on my own in California. I really have a strong desire to leave everything that has influenced me and enter some kind of nuetral or pure state. I think that being away from my parents, away from people that know me, away from the familiar routines and responsibilities; would give me freedom to grow into a new and better person. Not a person defined by the things that surround me, but a person closest to who I really am.
