I live in Fredericksburg, VA which is about 15-20 minutes from Appalachian Trails. Growing up I hiked at Graves Mountain a lot and still do to this day. I love it there, the views are absolutely stunning, even the drive there is beautiful. I love being outside and experiencing nature to the fullest. But being in Dr. Redick's ULLC 223 class has made my views on hiking even more fascinating. He shows the class pictures and videos of hikes he has completed and they make me want to jump through the screen and join him on his journeys across eastern America or California. He takes some of his classes on hikes (some are even thru hikes I'm guessing) and that really makes me want to register for those classes. I would love to take a class and eventually venture out in to the AT and wake up every morning knowing that I was not only there to better my education but to experience something bigger than myself.
A new goal for me since I have taken this class is to one day take a thru hike with some of my family and friends. I want to start off on the AT then try to venture to the pacific and hike the PCT!! This new goal for myself makes me happy and I know some day soon I will work up to it and achieve the goal. Until then I will day hike and section hike the AT and the Noland Trail!!
By the way since Dr. Redick has taken the class to the Noland Trail I have been have 4 times! I ran a three miles run one day, which is A LOT for me! I'm proud!
I comepltelty agree! After seeing Mt. Rainier and the AT, I now have set a goal to hike them sometime in my life (hopefully after graduation in two years). It motivates me to work towards something where I feel like I'll experience and be a part of something bigger than myself. - Laura Hancock
