Working on research for the annotated bibliography I came across a book about sacred sites. It was similar to the book we have been reading for class. This book takes a look at several different places and discussed whether or not they should considered a sacred place. There was one chapter in particular I found very interesting. It was discussing Stonehenge as whether or not it should be considered a sacred place. I found this interesting because it had to do with the paper was writing about. The chapter gave some good points in arguing Stonehenge should not be considered a sacred place. One of the most interesting reasons was about Stonehenge charging admission. The author argued for a sacred place you can charge admission, charging admission makes the place more of a tourist attraction.
I found this very interesting. If a place charges admission does that totally remove it from being a sacred site? It is an interesting question to think about. What if all of a sudden Mecca started charging admission, would that take away the sacredness of it? Personally, I don’t think charging admission takes all sacredness of a place. I can agree it most definitely hinders it, but I do not believe it removes all sanctity of it.
