Walker Riley "Lane's Four Axioms"
When I read Belden C. Lane's four axioms, I found them very interesting and I also believe them to be true. He says that sacred place is not chosen, it chooses. I think this is true because places I consider to be sacred or places that have a deeper meaning to me were not chosen by anyone. They're sacred and important to me because something unplanned happened that I now value. Therefore, the place really chose me, not the other way around. Lane also says that sacred place is ordinary, and ritually made extraordinary. This also makes sense because usually a sacred place isn't just some ordinary spot. Something had to have happened at that place to make it sacred, and that something is was ritually makes in extraordinary. Thirdly, Lane says sacred place can be tred upon without being entered. There have been plenty of times when I have felt in a sacred place without actually being there. When I look at the slides in class from Dr. Redick, it feels as if I'm experiencing the place, even though I'm not there. It's power is so high that I don't need to be present to feel it. Finally, Lane says sacred place is centrifugal and centripetal. To me, this means that sacred place has two forces, one driving you to it, and another driving you away from it. It can be so powerful that it can drive you right to it, but at the same time it might be driving you away. I can relate to these four axioms and believe Lane is correct when stating them.
