While studying for our midterm I read over Lane’s axioms to refresh my memory. After reading them for a second time I gained a much clearer understanding of his axioms. His third axiom, “sacred place can be tred upon with being entered” really resonated with me. At first I didn’t see how that was possible. How could you enter a place without entering it? But after reading through the chapter again I realized that Lane was not only talking about a physical entry. Basically, physically you can be there, but mentally you could not even realize it. I assume that this means that you have not made a connection with the place, therefore you have no idea. I guess this means that a sacred place does not have to be sacred for everyone. In fact, it could only be sacred to a single person. I can think of a few examples of this. When I was a kid there was a Willow tree in my backyard. I would go there with my friends and play and hide from my parents when I was upset. To me, the tree represented more than a tree. It was MY tree, MY sanctuary, where I was in charge, sacred to only me.
