After having a few long discussions with Aaron Hackett about some of the topics in class, I have come to a radically new understanding of the (potential) existence of a divine entity (God.) As a history major, my view of spirituality has always been shaped by religions, and my view of religions has always been shaped by Christianity. Thus, it is not surprise that Christian history disgusts me - more violence has been committed in the name of Christianity than any other ideology. We know that global colonization during the imperial age was declared to be in the name of spreading Christianity, but that it was really about justifying the torturous treatment of slaves. In other words, it made the colonizers not feel so bad about enslaving massive populations since they weren't Christians. Now that this class has allowed me to separate religion from spirituality, I opened my mind more so to the idea that there may a divine entity. Well-supported science appears to lead us roughly as far back as the big bang, and who's to say a divine entity isn't responsible for that? The fact of the matter is that we don't know, and I'm not going to be the one who tries to figure what if anything predated the big bang. So until then, I am conveniently unable to draw conclusions. Ignorance is (temporarily) bliss.
