Laura Hancock - The Noland Trail

While walking the Noland Trail with the class, I noticed many different people on the trail with us. This made me start to think about the different reasons why people like to be in a natural, undeveloped, setting. We - the class - were outside to learn. We were trying to view nature interactively, which is what made me really see and analyze the people around us. I saw other people walking by themselves or with their dogs. When I do this, I want to be able to reflect on something, to be alone and thoughtful. Other people on the trail were walking with other people though. For people like that, connections were happening. Nature is a relaxing setting and because of this it can facilitate communitas and unstructured communication. The last group of the people that I noticed were people who were jogging, or exercising.

There are many different reasons why people want to be outside. Natural settings can help people achieve multiple different types of goals. Each person interacts with and expects something different out of being in a natural setting. Just as I thought about this subject, someone else form the class might have interacted with nature to learn or experience something else.
