Kyle Tobin Turner's Rites of Transition
Turner describes a pilgrimage and other practices as being a "rites de passage". These rites of transition are marked by three phases: separation, margin, and aggregation. The first phase comprises of an individual becoming detached from a certain social structure. I feel that this phase is significant because to go through a "transition" means letting go of past attachments. Second phase discusses the margin between rites of transition and the intertwining of liminality. I feel as if this second phase was hard to understand and was not written that well. The third phase discusses how liminality may also be "what may be". I feel that this phase important because focusing on just current actions can get one in danger because an individual should be aware of what current action can do to influencing the future. These rites of transition hold strong influence in a person reaching enlightenment because it is the next step for a person to reach an awareness of the surrounding world.
